About Dr. Elspeth Lees

Who are you?

I work in the Faculty of Science & Natural Resources at the University of Cumbria (UoC), as a Senior Lecturer in Applied Science.

What is your role in the project?

The UoC Farm is the host site for the Eden Demonstration Test Catchment project as it based within the heart of Cumbria and the Eden River catchment and is respected within the community.   My role within the project is to lead the Newton Rigg Demonstration Centre by managing access to the farm for monitoring of the sub-catchment and implementing relevant mitigation projects for long-term monitoring of remedial effects.  These monitoring and mitigation practices will be included on a prescribed farm information tour which will facilitate knowledge transfer between the research consortium, the general public, educational establishments and other research groups.  In the first instance the UoC Farm Manager and I will work in collaboration with the Eden Rivers Trust to engage with land owners to raise awareness of Catchment Sensitive Farming and the DTC project, ultimately to identify farms willing to work with the Eden DTC consortium.

What is your background?

I have a background in the detection and monitoring of pollutants and other environmental markers in air, water and soil; the remedial processes for the treatment of pollution and the legislative frameworks which dictate pollution and its control.  I have worked at the UoC since September 2009 where I lecture in Environmental Science and Sustainability.
