Joint Sensors for Water Interest Group and EdenDTC Meeting (Updated)

EdenDTC is hosting a meeting for the Sensors for Water Interest Group on the Demostration Test Catchment approach on 23 March 2011.

Joint SWIG and EdenDTC Meeting at University of Cumbria (Penrith)
Conference Centre (Fellside), Newton Rigg campus, University of Cumbria, Penrith, CA11 0AH
Chairman: Phil Haygarth, Director CSWM, Lancaster Environment Centre and Project Leader EdenDTC
This meeting will comprise a morning of presentations and practical demonstrations, followed after lunch by a field tour of the EdenDTC Newton Rigg Demonstration Farm Platform.  Bring a warm coat and wellies!
The River Eden Demonstration Test Catchments (Eden DTC) project is developing a large-scale research platform to test measures for reducing diffuse pollution from agriculture.  It started in spring 2010 and will consider the impacts and effects on both ecosystems and sustainable production over a four year period.  This workshop provides an introduction to the Eden DTC, detailing the research platform and hardware that captures real time evidence, to understand the interaction of land use with water and, hence, develop improved and more sustainable approaches to farm management and catchment.  Discussions, supported by GIS and laboratory demonstration sessions, will reveal the monitoring capability and we will hear how monitoring from the air can provide invaluable data to compliment water-based measurements.
Looking beyond the Eden project, the workshop also examines future management changes and data gathering requirements with an update on current UKWIR research linking catchment-based science, policy and practices, and thence the impact on the water industry.  The workshop will also examine another catchment-monitoring case study from the Mires Project, in a live interactive session – an example of how wireless remote monitoring has overcome challenges related to power supply, network coverage, physical size, control and ability to provide real-time data.
